About the Student Visa - Subclass 500
The Subclass 500 Student Visa is a temporary visa that allows international students to stay in Australia for up to five years, depending on the length and type of the selected course. In certain cases—such as for primary school children—visas may be granted for a shorter duration (usually up to three years).
What does the Subclass 500 Visa offer?
- Enroll in an eligible course of study in Australia
- Travel in and out of Australia freely
- Work up to 40 hours per fortnight
- Work additional hours in select sectors (as permitted by the government)
Eligibility Criteria for Subclass 500
You must meet several requirements to apply for this visa:
- Financial Capacity: Depending on your country of residence, you may need to show proof of financial support.

Age Requirements for School Students(not in exchange programs):
- Under 17 years for Year 9
- Under 18 years for Year 10
- Under 19 years for Year 11
- Under 20 years for Year 12

Enrollment:You must be enrolled in a full-time CRICOS-registered course and provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
- Outside Australia:CoE required for each course
- Inside Australia:CoE or Letter of Offer required; CoE must be submitted before visa grant
- Welfare Arrangements:Students under 18 must have adequate welfare plans in place.
- English Language Proficiency:Provide valid test scores (e.g., IELTS, PTE). We offer PTE coaching to help you succeed.
- Health Insurance:You and any accompanying family members must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) from an approved Australian insurer.
- Health Requirements:Must meet all health conditions as required. If medical appointments were delayed due to COVID-19, extensions may apply.
- Visa Status:
- If applying within Australia, you must hold an eligible substantive visa
- Or apply within 28 days of your previous student visa expiry, or after certain visa cancellations being overturned
Visa Application Fees:
- Primary Applicant: AUD 2,100

- Aged 18 and over: AUD 2,100 per person
- Under 18: AUD 2,100 per person
Note: Students affected by COVID-19 may be eligible for a visa fee waiver in certain cases.
Need a Longer Stay?
If your visa is about to expire before graduation, you may be eligible for a Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) with a letter from your education provider confirming your expected graduation date.
You may also qualify for a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) if you completed certain qualifications in Australia within the last six months and held a student visa.
